When Lisa Saunders speaks on EVER TRUE she covers the following topics:
How Lisa became interested in this project (her interest in the Civil War, finding the letters). The condition of the letters. Unrecognizable words and missing dates.
The help Lisa received from historians and the elder generation. Where Lisa did the research (battlefields, forts, National Archives, rare books)
Artifacts and family secrets she uncovered
The background information needed to provide the context for the letters.
Deciding what to edit (Nancy's dead brother’s letters, prison and arrest records). Nancy McDowell's role in the war (running a pie business from Fort Foote). Other than battles, what other events can people expect to read (medical treatments, cooking and tent living, desertions, hangings, murder and theft, the occupying of a Confederate home, the stresses on Charles and Nancy’s marriage, prostitution). Charles's impression of Lincoln and Seward.
How Nancy and Charles felt about the war and the South. Lisa will read the letter of the Battle of Cold Harbor
Battle Lisa was most affected by.
She’ll discuss her favorite letter that speaks of his longing for Canada. Charles and Nancy’s life after the war.
Where she did the writing. The recipes Lisa included and why (apple pies, dumplings, hoecakes, sugar cakes, etc).
