"There's no such thing as a boring life." Mark Twain
New York 9th Heavy Artillery Roster
List supplied by Betty Auten (who died after supplying A's-M's)and 9th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery (N's-Z's)
Betty undertook the enormous task of compiling a list of all New York Civil War Veterans (as well as other wars). Here is her note to you:

"My name is Betty Auten.I was historian for Seneca County, NY for 20 years and have been historian for Town of Waterloo for 30 years. As such I became interested in learning about the Civil War soldiers; first those from the immediate area but as I discovered more resource material, I spread out over all of New York State. I now have about 150,000 men in the collection and continue to add more each day.
You asked about certain abbreviations. I will copy the letter which heads my collection It contains all the abbreviations.

This is a collection of men who served from New York State, settled in other states after the war and men who served in other states and settled in New York State after the war. It is an attempt to identify as many of the brave men who served and hopefully help to straighten out some of the records which because of any reason a man was erroneously listed as deserter, missing, dead or any other cause. By attempting to collect each man from every record, such errors can be recognized. It is with great empathy and affection I assemble this collection for the descendents of those heroes of our past.

Elizabeth [Betty] Schmidt-Auten

I have worked with many resources most of these were on microfilm which I purchased. Resources purchased: All available New York 1865 and 1890 censuses; two town registers, one complete, second one need more of these, Phisterer book, Men of the Regiments - muster rolls - Books = Roll of Honor, military cemeteries; These Honored Dead, deaths at Gettysburg; a number of regimental histories - both books and microfilms - internet - CD of "Correspondence and Records of the Civil War" published by Guild Press

Some such as the Adjutant General Records, Excell burial records I was able to borrow and microfilm myself . I also purchased books of regiment histories and abstracted any data relating to the men.

Finally, the internet has been most helpful. Nearly every county throughout the United States has cemetery or military records relating to these brave men. There are also many regimental histories available. Many are lists of names and place of enlistment, very time consuming for the amount of information that is available. But there are others that are very helpful in developing a personality which is the important feature in identifying an ancestor. It is only by collecting each item one by one that one can find the errors, such as marked as deserter.

In the attempt to put together a collection of over a quarter of a million men and checking about ten different resources, it is difficult to indentify each resources. I will try but if I fail, it is not intentional.

The Adjutant General Reports always begin with name, age, enlisted [en] where.

All names listed in capital letters were taken from the internet.

11-22 double set of numbers from 1865 census

Name in capital letters taken from internet

Name followed by county of birth from town register

Date 1890 in item from 1890 census

These are from just one regiment of Artillery. There were 194 regiments of Infantry; about 50 to 60 regiments of Artillery; 20+ of Cavalry, few others and the Militia. For researching these men [about a quarter of a million] I work with about a dozen different resources: 1865 and 1890 census; two town registers, several books, etc. I very seldom check the Muster Rolls. I have found them very inaccurate and they contain little information. The best is the 1865 census, the Adjutant General Records and town registers. These contain additional information in addition to enlistment.

My GG Grandfather William Arnwine was in 9th HA. He left for war Sept 6,

1864 and never returned. He died of typhoid less than 2 months later. His

wife was JUST pregnant for their 12 th child which was born in May 27, 1865.

I had a heck of a time in my research. I couldn't understand how a woman

with 12 kids could just disappear! Turns out she remarried in 1872.
